UNIT 4:  Physical Intervention Skills for the Private Security Industry

Aim
– This unit is intended to provide candidates with a wider range of non-violent options for dealing with the most common scenarios involving physical contact in licensed premises.  It does not offer a technique to cover every possible situation but provides a solid foundation in terms of knowledge and skills to further reduce risk to the customers and staff.

Main topics

• Understand physical interventions and the legal and professional implications of their use
• Understand how to reduce the risk of harm when physical intervention skills are used
• Be able to use non-aggressive physical skills to protect yourself and others from assault
• Be able to use non-pain related standing, holding and escorting techniques, including non-restrictive and restrictive skills
• Understand good practice to follow after physical interventions

Course Overview
This course is suitable for those already holding a current door supervisors license who now wish to complete the Physical Intervention unit due to legislative changes.

Entry requirements:

The course will require repeated practice of specific physical intervention skills so a reasonable fitness level is required. Students should not be carrying any injury or condition that may put you or others at risk. Students will be asked to sign a declaration to this effect. Please speak with our tutors if you have any concerns.

Course structure:

The course will be a one day programmed which will cover the following elements:

Disengagement
- this unit addresses how staff can protect themselves or others from assault. It includes training on how to separate and guide people. The content includes relevant law, medical implications and safe practices.

Holding
- the restrictive escorting and holding skills unit addresses the area of restraint. The course focuses on teaching safer skills for common holding activities such as ejection, standing holds and escorts. It also raises awareness of the additional risks associated with ground holding techniques.

How is the course delivered?

The delivery of the programme uses a combination of teaching and scenario-based learning and includes physical practices. It includes the use of force and accountability and the potential medical implications.
Students will be issued with a course workbook in advance of the course and should ensure that they have a reasonable knowledge of the contents prior to commencement. Students should also ensure that this workbook is with them at the commencement of the course. Suitable clothing and footwear is essential to take part in the course.

Certification will be provided for the successful completion of the unit from HABC.

HABC LEVEL 2 AWARD in UPSKILLING DOOR SUPERVISORS QUALIFICATION

In March 2012 the SIA announced the intention to require existing door supervisors who had achieved the pre-QCF Door Supervision qualifications (for example the National Certificate for Door Supervision) to undertake additional training in order to renew their license.

It is anticipated that this requirement will be introduced late in 2012 and will provide you with the opportunity to increase levels of training within your Centre. The SIA are expected to release a statement shortly confirming when this will be introduced as a mandatory requirement.
HABC have been involved in discussions with the SIA to develop a new qualification that will meet these new requirements for SIA Door Supervisor license renewals, and the HABC Level 2 Award in Up skilling Door Supervisors (QCF) (600/5777/4) will be launched in June 2012.

HABC are one of the first Awarding Organisations to receive Ofqual approval to offer the Level 2 Award in Up skilling Door Supervisors qualification.

The new qualification comprises the following two mandatory units of assessment:
·         Physical Intervention Skills for the Private Security Industry; and
·         Safety Awareness for Door Supervisors.
The new Safety Awareness for Door Supervisors unit of assessment and workbook have been developed to cover the following subjects within the security sector:
·         Counter Terrorism
·         First Aid Awareness
·         Dealing with Children and Young People.

Cost: £90

The Safety Awareness for Door Supervisors unit will be assessed by a multiple choice examination which will be externally set and internally marked. The Physical Intervention unit will continue to be assessed by ongoing practical assessment and true/false written questions. Successful learners must achieve a pass in both units of assessment.

In March 2012 the SIA announced the intention to require existing door supervisors who had achieved the pre-QCF Door Supervision qualification (for example the National Certificate for Door Supervision) to undertake additional training in order to renew their licence.

Licence Renewals and Training

You don't need to re-take your training if you currently hold a licence and you are looking to renew it. However, if you attained your qualification before the current ones were introduced (Summer 2010) then you won't have undertaken some of the training that people with the newer qualifications will have received.

If this applies to you then from 4 February 2013 you will need to pass the 'Up-Skilling for Door Supervisors' award before you can renew your licence. The award involves one day of training in physical intervention as well as self-study on topics such as first aid, awareness of terrorist threats and considerations in dealing with children and young people. It is available from training providers offering the licence-linked door supervision qualification.

The physical intervention training included in this award has been available as a stand-alone unit since June 2010. If you have previously completed this training then you will not need to repeat it; however, you will still need to complete the self-study workbook and have it signed by a tutor.
If you hold a door supervisor licence but carry out the licensable activities of a security guard (that is, you do not work in relation to licensed premises) then you may after 4 February choose to change to a security guard licence when your licence comes up for renewal. You will not have to take additional training in order to do so, just request 'Security Guard' on your renewal application (Section B - Application Type).
